PAST QUESTIONS: A
Key to EXAMINATION excellence!

can take the place of hard work, not even talent or brilliance. To pass any
examination you will need to practice hard, attend lectures passionately. You
might need to understand your examiner in advance; especially his thought
patterns and you will need to be a peculiar student with your answer scripts
There
is yet another route that holds an ace to university success in addition to
those mentioned above which is “solving
past questions before the examination.” You might say, “That’s no news, I
solve past questions every time and my results changed little.” Let’s get to
the root of the matter by answering the following questions:
·
How
many years’ past question papers did you get?
·
Are
those questions borrowed or you have personal copies?
·
Did
you try out all the questions?
·
Did
you solve them unaided?
·
Did
you meet colleagues to help with difficult questions?
·
Did
you try them out again unaided?
·
Did
you solve the questions under examination conditions?
An
honest answer to the above could show you a light on university success.
Some
examination questions have changed little in the history of our university, so
why not rush to make photocopies of those questions? When you get past questions of 10 years
running, you have a powerful weapon in your hand with which you can pass any
examination. Reading with past question papers gives you a shorter route to
your success destination provided you can solve the questions on your own, with
the same time allocated in the instruction.
5 POWERFUL ADVANTAGES OF PAST QUESTIONS!
(1) Shows
the scope of the course
The scope of the
course is revealed in each past question paper as these questions that have
been asked before and hold possibility to be asked again. Some lecturers bring
questions spanning the whole length of the course material. Variations are also
revealed because different lecturers may have set those questions.
(2) eveals
your examiner’s favourite question
Your lecturer(s) has
some favourite questions that he will always ask. A rule of thumb is that any
question that occurs in at least four (4) question papers is a ‘favourite’. So
master the solution.
(3) Tells
you how prepared you are
I remember shying
away from past questions in my first year in the university and I once ran out
of a tutorial exam because I couldn’t solve the question. This showed I was
unprepared and I had a woeful result that time. So use past questions to assess
your level of preparedness. Don’t attempt to deceive yourself about your
preparedness because you can’t.
(4) Identifies
your strong points
When using past
questions and you notice your essay skills are not very strong but you are quite
numeric (excelling in calculation-oriented questions). You may need to perfect
your essay skills and make sure you answer numeric questions first in the exams
to maximize time and talents. Always answer your strong points first in any
examination
(5) Reveals
the pattern of questioning
Some questions, as
you will soon find out, are constants (“answer question 1 compulsory”) while
others are supplements (“Answer any other 3”). You will notice that ‘constants’
are usually thorny questions but you must master them because your examiner
will always ask. That said; you may need to master five supplements so that you
are more capable to answer any chosen supplement. The key here is proficiency.
Solve questions in which you are quite proficient first.
Hey! Don’t ever doubt the impact of Past Questions, for
even the Bible does not deny in Ecclesiates
1:9-10 that “The thing that hath
been, it is that which shall
be; and that which is done is
that which shall be done: and there is
no new thing under the sun. Is
there an thing whereof it may
be said, See, this is new? it
hath been already of old time, which was before us. If the WORD says it,
the WORLD cannot deny or defy it! Be WISE!
